Developing Creative Ideas

Show Up Productions and TOMA (The Other MA) support creatives to develop ideas, make new connections and share their work in supportive environments.

We are excited to connect scriptwriters with contemporary artists through this sharing session, drawing on our different house styles of testing work and sharing ideas.

What happens when visual artists sit in on table read? How might scriptwriters contribute to an art school crit?

Let’s find out! Come along to this afternoon to enjoy new work and feedback your thoughts!

Part One: A Table Read of New Play "WATCHING THE SKY GO DARK" by Andi courtland

This new play will be read aloud by professional actors, who sit on stage; the stage directions are read out and there are no props, sets or costumes. It's a chance for the writer to hear the play out loud and receive feedback from the actors and you the audience!

The opportunity for a script to be performed is incredibly valuable to a writer. The medium of theatre is in its performance! Scripts are meant to be performed and so it’s only when heard out loud and hear feedback from others, that a writer can really gauge what is working and where improvements are needed.

Part Two: Crits with TOMA

It can be daunting to put your work into the world and wait for feedback. For 10 years, crits have been a core part of TOMA’s artist-led education model.

At a TOMA crit, you can expect the sharing of work and ideas (in any art form and at any stage of ‘completion’) as well as dedicated, structured space to give and receive feedback with care. To make the sharing process less nerve wracking, we use Crit Sheets to guide discussions and gather notes and we time each crit to ensure everyone’s work receives the same focus. Each crit aims to gather references, practical suggestions for development and an idea of what people find interesting about the work.

At this crit, a number of TOMA artists will share work, open their ideas up and invite attendees to give feedback. We look forward to hosting ‘open crits’ with more slots in the future, so do come along on this occasion to see how it works!
