Organised by our friends the Hadleigh Community Group with stalls and Santa’s Grotto.

Followed by Hadleigh’s Carols and Christmas Lights Switch On event at St. James the Less Church from 4pm.

Christmas Children’s Competition Trail - a number of Hadleigh town’s businesses will have a ‘Gift from Santa’ in their Christmas themed window displays. Entry forms available from Hadleigh Library - drop your completed form to Santa’s Grotto. Competition winner drawn around 4pm.

So are you interested in local history? In which case we have a treat for you this weekend at Hadleigh Old Fire Station.

Upstairs, in Studio 17, celebrated local history group, The Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archive, will be displaying rare century old (and even older) Ordnance Survey maps of Hadleigh, Thundersley and Daws Heath.
Most are at the most detailed scale of 25 inches to the mile and show every house, barn or shed. Some of these old maps have been painstakingly reinterpreted in colour using digital technology, bringing the landscape to life in a truly remarkable way.

Most topically, there is a special feature about the Hadleigh Salvation Army Farmland - and local history experts will be on hand to field your best questions.
Entry to the whole site is free - so come and enjoy the art (much of which is for sale) and take a moment to check out the old maps to discover what was there before your road was built.

Phil’s artwork is diverse and multi-disciplinary and at any one time he might have several different things on the go. His work is generally conceptually based and usually serial in nature.

The main feature for this open weekend will be on a series of self-programmed digital drawings of large numbers of random straight lines.

Juliet works her magic with yarn and transforms it into unique and distinctive knitwear. Tucked away in her ground floor studio at HoFs, she uses her vintage hand framed knitting machine to produce clothing and accessories that are sustainable and timeless. She loves working with clients to produce a perfect piece for themselves or as gifts.
.
Juliet is also part of the amazing @sevenartistsuk collective that regularly shows at the Leigh Art Trail, and will have some of her artists books on display.

"My fascination with shape, pattern, texture and colour remains a constant in my work. Subjects may range from the man made to the natural world but my focus is always the forms and structures the symmetry and the geometry. I enjoy recycling and reusing found objects and exploring the possibilities of various materials. The work I will be showing for the exhibition uses donated yarn stitched onto an old metal display screen"

First up is Amanda Jackson, who you can find out more about at @amandajacksonart, and also see her work at @twotreegallery.

"The continuing focus for my paintings is water and watery places but I am developing a way of working that allows the fluidity of paint to take the lead. Seeing where the liquid pools of paint direct and so the paintings that I create are more about my remembered landscapes and how I feel when in that environment than a direct representation of the place. As always the journey of creation and an element of surprise at the finished painting is what drives me onward."

‘Finding the Flow of Things’

‘Finding the Flow of Things’ is a creative workshop by Estuary Festival - moving and playing with ideas to support the development of projects.

Participants will be invited to explore the notion of ‘Vessels’ – the driving concept for Estuary 2025 – through a range of activities, prompts and discussions.

Let your imagination flow, exploring various topics and themes related to the Estuary through a series of exercises. This hands-on workshop is aimed at creatives and/or producers from any background based in Castle Point or interested in producing independent activities in the borough for Estuary 2025’s ‘Estuary Anthology’ programme.  Estuary Festival will be launching an Expression of Interest on the night that invites suggestions on seminar support themes. The event will be of interest to any creative or producer looking to expand ideas and projects, as well as exchange and share thoughts with others.  Hope to see you there!

The Other MA (TOMA) is an 18-month artist-run learning programme based in Southend-on-Sea supporting artists who have faced barriers accessing art education and the ‘art world’. TOMA was set up in 2016 to offer affordable, accessible and responsive art education to artists and we are the only postgraduate level art programme in Essex after all others were stopped by their host universities. We are unaccredited in the traditional sense, but provide a programme of learning that benefits artists in the same way. We are looking for a new cohort of 15 artists to join TOMA for 2024.

TOMA was born out of and has been shaped by austerity and the decades long businessification and dismantling of creative education. This, alongside the rise of tuition fees, means it is difficult for artists to flourish unless they become part of the financialised art world. They are working with the local authority, Castle Point Borough Council to build a picture of practitioners in the area, and want to help people connect with opportunities and each other.

Well that came down quicker than it took to put up.

A BIG thank you to everyone who came along and supported our Art Exhibition for the last 2 weekends - the team and artists from @hofshadleigh, the @castlepointartistopenstudios for expanding it to the wider community, @openartsessex for such a colourful and thoughtful wall of creativity, and the @theartministry1992 for joining us.

Also to @plantfaced.coffeeshop for keeping us going with delicious refreshments (we'll be running down to them for our fix of brownies)
